Wow, what a tour!
One of the highlights of our Italy adventure was visiting the Ducati Factory and Museum in Bologna during Ducati Month.
We joined a guided 90-minute factory tour with an English-speaking guide and a group of just ten people. We were able to see around 90% of the production facility, although access to the Ducati Corse racing development area was understandably restricted.
From bins of new parts waiting for assembly to viewing Ducati models at various stages of production, there was always something happening around us. Unfortunately, photography wasn't permitted inside the factory, but the experience itself was unforgettable.
Walking amongst the production lines and seeing the team members in full Ducati branding was fascinating. On one side, V2 engines were being assembled, while V4 engines were taking shape on the other. We noticed many of the engine assembly technicians and lead quality controllers were female, bringing a level of precision and care to the handling of engine internals that was impressive to watch.
The tour continued through the main assembly areas, bike testing stations, static and dynamic tuning processes, and final quality inspections before fairings and screens were fitted. It was a fantastic experience and definitely one that's now ticked off my bucket list. Nicky thoroughly enjoyed it as well.
Who knows, perhaps we'll return one day after ordering a limited-edition Ducati to watch it being built and personalised with factory extras... oops, I mean "our" Ducati!
The Ducati Museum is an absolute must-visit. Every bike is a piece of art, with an incredible collection of racing machines, memorabilia, stories, and leathers from Ducati's history.
For me, it was especially nostalgic seeing the bikes from the 1980s onwards that helped fuel my transition from Japanese motorcycles to what has become a lifelong Ducati addiction.
Sardinia by Motorcycle
The adventure didn't stop there.
We hired a motorcycle through Motorent Sardinia and embarked on a self-guided seven-day tour around the island, using their recommended routes and maps on our phones. Nicky took on the navigator's role while we covered approximately 2,000 kilometres of stunning roads.
The riding was outstanding. We experienced everything from sweeping curves and tight hairpins to smooth tarseal, concrete roads, and cobblestone streets. We rode sections of the famous SS125 and explored countless small Italian towns, staying in wonderful local accommodation along the way.
One of the best parts of the trip was meeting riders from all over the world and making new connections with people who share the same passion for motorcycles.
Sardinia was another major bucket-list destination ticked off. We would highly recommend it to anyone considering a motorcycle tour. The weather was hot and extremely dry, with temperatures regularly exceeding 30ยฐC. Most days were accompanied by the scent of olive trees and the sea, creating a riding experience unlike anywhere else.
And yes, after a few days, you do get used to the Italian driving style!
Italy delivered unforgettable motorcycling experiences, incredible people, amazing roads, and plenty of Ducati inspiration.
Ride safe, keep the rubber side down, and we hope to see many of you out on the road.
